Ghost Nails: How to Paint a Cute Gel Ghost in 6 Steps

Ghost Nails: How to Paint a Cute Gel Ghost in 6 Steps

Halloween nails · 6 steps · cute, not scary

A ghost is a white dome with a wavy hem and two dots for eyes. The secret is building the white in thin layers so it stays clean against a dark ground.

You will need

  • Black or deep purple gel
  • White detailing gel
  • Black detailing gel
  • Fine detail brush
  • Dotting tool
  • Top coat
  • LED lamp
  1. Prep and base

File, buff, wipe and dehydrate the nail with pH Bond. Brush on a thin coat of base coat, cap the free edge, and cure.

TipWhite shows every speck of dust, so brush the nail clean before you start.

  2. Lay the dark ground

Two thin coats of Super Black, deep purple or navy make the ghost glow. Cure each coat.

TipWipe the surface with a lint free wipe so the white has a clean ground.

  3. Draw the ghost body

Load a fine brush with White detailing gel. Paint a rounded dome, then pull the bottom edge into three soft waves. Cure.

TipPlace the ghost off center so the nail does not look crowded.

  4. Build the white

White over a dark ground is sheer on the first pass. Add a second thin coat, tidy the edge of the hem, and cure again.

TipThin layers stay smooth. A single thick coat can wrinkle.

  5. Add the face

Touch two round eyes with the tip of a dotting tool dipped in Black detailing gel. Add a small oval mouth. Cure.

TipEyes set slightly wide and low look the cutest.

  6. Seal, or make it glow

Seal with Diamond No Wipe Top Coat, or use Glow in the Dark Top Coat 01 as the final layer so the ghost lights up once it has been charged under light.

TipCharge the nails under a bright lamp or daylight, then turn the lights off.

Quick answers

Why does my white ghost look see-through?

White gel is sheer over dark colors. Add a second thin coat and cure between coats instead of one thick coat.

Can I make the ghost glow in the dark?

Yes. Use Glow in the Dark Top Coat 01 as the final layer. It glows once it has been charged under light.

What if I cannot draw the wavy hem?

Press a dotting tool along the bottom edge to make three round bumps, then tidy them with the brush.
