Black gel · 6 steps · gloss or matte
Black is a classic, and it shows every flaw. Thin coats, full cures and a careful top coat give you a deep, even finish.
You will need
- Super Black gel
- Base coat
- Gloss or matte top coat
- LED lamp
- Lint free wipes
-
Prep and prime
File, buff and wipe the nail. Dehydrate with pH Bond. Brush off every bit of dust, because dust is easy to see under black.
TipWork in good light so you can spot dust and bubbles before you cure.
-
Lay the base
Brush on a thin coat of base coat or Rubber Base, cap the free edge, and cure.
TipA smooth base gives the black a smooth surface to lie on.
-
First coat, thin
Super Black is made to cover in a coat or two. Brush on a thin first coat, keep it off the skin, and cure.
TipDo not try to cover everything in one thick coat. Thick black cures unevenly.
-
Second coat, even
Add a second thin coat. Float the brush across the nail with light pressure, then cure. Wipe the nail with a lint free wipe and check the surface.
TipIf you see a thin spot, add a very thin third coat rather than pressing harder.
-
Choose your finish
For a mirror shine, seal with Diamond No Wipe Top Coat. For a velvet look, use Super Matte Top Coat. For a mirror effect, start from Chrome Base Natural Black and add chrome powder.
TipMatte top coat shows every bump, so make sure the black is smooth before you seal.
-
Clean up and finish
Cure the top coat, then clean any gel off the skin with a thin brush and cleanser. Finish with cuticle oil.
TipIf a client prefers a HEMA free formula, choose the HEMA free and TPO free Super Black.
